Edge lifting / delamination

Diagnosis

Lifting of the coating at the edges is usually caused by insufficient vacuum, low heat/time or a sealing problem.

Possible causes

  • Insufficient vacuum / vacuum leak
  • Low heat or short cycle time
  • Worn membrane
  • Leaking cover / damaged gasket surface

Inspection steps

  • Measure the vacuum value and check for leaks
  • Verify the heat and time recipe
  • Inspect the membrane for tears/thinning
  • Check the cover seal

Recommended solution

Restore the sealing of the cover/gasket and membrane; repair the vacuum line. If the gasket surface is damaged, the cover must be renewed.

Gloss difference / localized matting

Diagnosis

Glossy-matte areas on the surface indicate that pressure is not distributed evenly. The most common cause is out-of-flatness of the pin plate or worn pins.

Possible causes

  • Pin plate losing its flatness
  • Worn / bent pins
  • Uneven pressure distribution

Inspection steps

  • Check the flatness of the pin plate
  • Inspect the pins for wear/bending
  • Observe the pressure distribution with a test pressing

Recommended solution

Renew the out-of-flat plate and the worn pins to the original dimensions; this restores even pressure and a homogeneous surface.

Bubble / air pocket

Diagnosis

A bubble or air pocket beneath the coating results from membrane wear, a vacuum leak, or moisture/dust on the surface.

Possible causes

  • Worn / torn membrane
  • Vacuum leak
  • Moisture or dust on the part surface

Inspection steps

  • Check the condition of the membrane
  • Test for a vacuum leak
  • Make sure the parts are clean and dry

Check the membrane and the vacuum system; replace the worn membrane and improve surface preparation.

Vacuum not holding / not reaching the value

Diagnosis

If the press cannot reach the required vacuum value, there is a leak or a pump problem. The source is most often the cover or the membrane.

Possible causes

  • Cover / gasket leak
  • Membrane tear
  • Leak in the vacuum line
  • Drop in pump performance

Inspection steps

  • Check the cover and gasket surface
  • Inspect the membrane for tears
  • Check the line connections and the pump

Recommended solution

Renew the leaking cover/gasket surface and the membrane; eliminate line leaks. If the problem persists, have the pump checked.

Pin not seating / working loose

Diagnosis

Pins that seat with difficulty or work loose indicate pin/socket wear or plate deformation.

Possible causes

  • Wear on pins and sockets
  • Pin plate deformation
  • Wrong dimension / incompatible pin

Inspection steps

  • Check the pin and socket dimensions
  • Check the flatness of the plate
  • Verify pin compatibility

Recommended solution

Recurring scrap / increased downtime

Diagnosis

A general rise in scrap and downtime shows that several parts are wearing out at the same time; systematic maintenance is required.

  • General wear on pins/plate/cover/membrane

  • Review all wear parts
  • Examine the scrap/downtime records
