What Is Laser Alignment and Why Does It Matter? Reducing Vibration and Wear

Misaligned shafts and pulleys cause vibration, wear and energy loss. We explain what laser alignment is and why it is critical.

In rotating machinery, the relative position of shafts, couplings and pulleys matters down to the micron level. Even a slight misalignment leads to serious vibration, bearing wear and energy loss over time. Laser alignment is a method for precisely measuring and correcting this misalignment.

How is laser alignment performed?

A laser alignment device (for example the XT-326L S2) measures axial and angular misalignment in real time using sensors mounted on the shafts. Based on the measurement data, the operator adjusts the foot/position to bring the shaft within tolerance. The process is far faster and more precise than traditional straightedge/dial methods.

Laser alignment measures the parallel and angular misalignment of coupling and shaft axes, reducing vibration and wear.

Why does it matter?

  • Vibration is reduced → bearing and seal life is extended
  • Energy consumption drops (friction losses decrease)
  • The risk of unplanned downtime and failure is reduced
  • Production quality and machine safety improve

When should it be done?

Laser alignment is recommended for new installations, after motor/pump replacement, in the event of increased vibration or noise, and as part of periodic maintenance. We provide alignment service on site with fast application using our XT-326L S2 device.
